METCALFE CURLING CLUB
Our Banquet, May 10th, 2008
Thanks
to everyone who helped decorate last night. We will be
decorating tonight at 7:00 pm and sure could use some more
help. Always need people to climb ladders and students are
welcome.
We have 131 people
coming to the banquet, the banquet committee is looking forward to seeing you all at the banquet!
The curling club ice surface is being transformed for the occasion, you
won't recognize it. Just a reminder if you have
something for a door prize please bring it along and we'll
put it on the prize table. If you are
bringing an appetizer, same thing, bring it early enough to have it on
the table when our guests arrive. If that is a problem,
please contact Martha. If anyone else is bringing an
appetizer besides, Debbie Duguay, Kim ,
Anne, Martha, Heather, and Kariane, please let Martha
know. I want to make sure we have enough.
Monday night at 7:00 pm is
cleanup, if you can spare a 1/2 please come down. It
would totally ,,,,,,,,,,,totally be
appreciated.
Anne, Kim and Martha
Nominating committee
The general meeting on Wednesday had to be
suspended before the nominations for next year's executive and
committees were voted on by everyone who was present at the meeting.
Due to our constitution's present wording, this year's nominee for 2nd

member. The nominating committee approached Arlynn McPhee and she
had
accepted being nominated for the position and
to be part of our executive for the next 4 years.
During the banquet, we will be reading all of
the upcoming years nominees and asking our attending membership to
approve these positions by a show of hands. If anyone is interested in
putting their
names up for one of the following committees,
please let Rick Smith know before the banquet starts. The

Buck Day Spiel
The Metcalfe Curling Club closed out another fun curling season with
its annual Buck Day Spiel. Open to members and non-members alike
it's a great way to introduce (or re-introduce) people to the fun and
social aspects of curling. With 16 teams and 64 curlers with a
vast range of experience a pleasant time was had by all, although
several left with headaches (and a few probably woke up with a
headache). Thanks go to Sue and Jeff Cumming and their crew for
the bang up job on the traditional soup and sandwich lunch and the
simple hamburgers and hot dogs (with fried onions!!) for supper.
Thanks also to Jeff Laniel and his troupe of bartenders for keeping the
proceedings properly lubricated. As for the prize table, thanks
to Linda Scrivens and her band of shoppers for ensuring that there was
something for everyone. Congratulations and the trophy go to Stan
Turner and his team as they edged out the Tim Parsons team by half a
point. At the end of the evening there was an error noted on the
scoresheet posted in the club but a further review of the scoresheets
for the individual games has confirmed the final totals of 27.5 versus
27.0.
Thanks also to Anne Davis for ensuring the club was, once again, nicely
decorated for the day. And a special thank you to Stan Turner and
Angie Kennedy for their help with one of the new curlers who slipped on
the ice. Congratulations to Katie Andrews, the winner of the gift
basket that was raffled off.
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at both the General Meeting
and the Toga Party Banquet in May. Until then, Go Sens Go!

this event and to Sue for her hard work in encouraging people to sign
up. Al would like us to be at the Greely Community Centre at 4:45
pm on Saturday. Please wear a white shirt or blouse and black slacks.
You will be assigned a task when you get there and Al or one of his
staff will make you familiar with what you will be doing.
Al has also invited everyone back to his place after
for drinks etc................

Canada draws Scotland at curling worlds
Team Canada pummelled the United States 10-4 in eight
ends in Thursday's 17th and final draw at the world men's curling
championship in Grand Forks, N.D.
Canadian skip Kevin Martin punctuated the romp with a
pretty angle raise for three points in the eighth, capping a day that
began with an 8-6 triumph over Claudio Pescia of Switzerland.
Kevin
Martin studies the ice in Thursday's 8-6 triumph over Switzerland.
(Andrew Vaughan/Canadian Press)
"We needed to come out with a good effort and we did,"
Martin told reporters at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
"Everybody played pretty darn solid. Even when we got up
a few, we still played some aggressive shots."
Martin's Edmonton rink closed out the round-robin at
10-1, and will take on David Murdoch of Scotland in the 1-2 Page
playoff on Friday night (8 p.m. ET).
The winner will advance directly to Sunday's
championship final (CBC, 2:30 p.m. ET), while the loser challenges the
winner of the 3-4 playoff in Saturday's semifinal (2 p.m. ET).
"We have to have a good start and adjust to the ice as
quick as possible," Canadian lead Marc Kennedy said. "The Scots are
great hitters.
"Hopefully, the ice is curling lots and we can get into
a little bit of a finesse game."
Murdoch (8-3) secured sole possession of second place
with a 7-4 victory over Denmark's Johnny Frederiksen in the evening
draw.
"They can play a finesse game and hit like crazy,"
Martin said. "You don't want to get down to them, that's for sure.
"Murdoch is really playing well. He has a lot of
confidence going into the playoffs, so it will make for a good test."
"You want to play the best team and you want to win
playing against the best team," Murdoch said. "These guys are playing
well.
"It is going to be a really hard game. We will just have
to match them rock for rock."
Fengchun Wang of China defeated Norway's Thomas Ulsrud
7-4 in an extra end to clinch the third seed in his debut at the worlds.
Both contenders finished tied for third at 7-4, but Wang
earned third billing with the win.
"We have worked hard for seven years, from 2001, and
worked very hard in practice every day," Wang said through an
interpreter. "Now we have a good result.
"It is a surprise and so exciting and amazing. Like our
girl's team winning silver."
Wang, who upset Martin 6-5 in an extra end on Wednesday,
will challenge Ulsrud in Friday's 3-4 playoff (3 p.m. ET).
Martin seeks first world title
Martin is seeking his first world title in three trips,
losing the 1991 final to David Smith of Scotland and finishing a
disappointing fourth
in 1997.
"You don't want to lose your edge," said Martin, a
three-time Brier winner and silver medallist at the 2002 Salt Lake
Olympic Winter Games.
"Everybody is pretty into it, it's good to see.
Everybody is not accepting the misses very well, it's good.
"Everybody is on edge a bit, that's good. We're
definitely not complacent, that's for sure."
Canada has won a record 30 world championships since
1959; Sweden is next with five titles.

2008 Fixed Playoffs
Two more nights of curling plus Buck Day to go
for this season. Come on up to the
club and make some new golf friends or just some one
else that you can talk to over
the fence during the summer. Oh yeah, back to
curling, the final for the D Divison is
tonight as well as an A and a B semifinal.
As in previous years in all Final games, the team who
has not lost a game only (big word)
have to win that game and they win the final. If the
opposing team wins the 8 end game
then the two teams take a 15 minute break and return
to the ice to play a deciding 6
end match - winner taking the trophy.

Buck Day
The playoffs are in full swing and the curling season
will soon done but there's still one more chance. Next Saturday
is Buck Day at the club and it would be a great opportunity to
introduce a friend or family member to this great sport. Open to
members and non-members it's a good chance to throw that last rock and
close out the season before enjoying all the fun that spring and summer
have to offer. There is a sign-up sheet in the club or, if you
prefer, you can send Steve Hindle an email at shindle19@hotmail.com
. You can sign up as a team or as individuals. He will be
contacting people starting on Wednesday so sign-up now. It's only
$10 per curler for 2 six-end games. See you at the club!
Greely Lions Spring Gala
The sign-up sheet for this important
event is up at the club or you can contact Sue Cumming at
613-445-1994. We still need volunteers to reach our 30

Saturday, April 19th, 2008. This puts $3000 of well needed
revenue into our club coffers and we would like to get some of the
newer members involved. A great meal and after hours party at Al
Graham's house are traditions.
The Banquet May 10th, 2008
Tickets for the Banquet and tickets for the draw for
the basket will be available all next week at the club during the
playoffs. Get them quick.

finishing in 1st place overall in our fixed league curling and winning
the
Porteous Club Championship trophy.
2008 Canadian Seniors
A hearty well done goes out to Bruce Delaney's seniors
team which included our own Dunc Jamieson as they finished up in
fifth place overall with a 7 - 4 record at the 2008 Canadian
Seniors held in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Considering the
calibre of some of the leading teams, this was a pretty impressive
finish.

Things to consider
The position of the skip's broom is only a
reference point
Dusting is not as hard work as sweeping
Curling is one of the only activities you can
do where half of your drinks are free
SPRING 2008 NEWSLETTER
Spring
has sprung
The
grass has ris
I wonder
where
The
flowers is???!!!
No grass
or flowers this spring, just mountains of snow…good for curling though
as it still feels like winter. But when I look at
the calendar, April 12, Buck Day is fast approaching. Another
season over and thoughts turn to summer activities. Before
this happens, we have some important dates coming up.
Friday,
March 28, Homegrown café and beach/margarita/nacho night at the
Curling Club ending off our season of mixed curling. Come
out and have some fun and get those vocal cords warmed up (maybe with a
few margaritas) and join in the fun.
Play-offs
for the Fixed League start next week so even if you are not out on the
ice, come out and watch you fellow curlers play off for their
respective trophies.
Saturday,
April 5 is the Fair Board Rental. Heather Bellinger
is looking for more teams so sign up and come out and support your
friends in the local Agricultural Societies for what is sure to be a
fun day.
Saturday,
April 12 is Buck Day. Everyone is welcome to curl
(curlers and non-curlers alike) and it’s your last chance to curl in
Metcalfe for the 2007/2008 season. A sign up sheet
has been posted at the club.
Saturday,
April 19 brings us the Greely Lions Fundraiser. The
format is the same as other years. We need at least
30 volunteers and this is very important as it brings in $3,000 for the
curling club. See the sign up sheet at the top of
the stairs at the Curling Club.
Wednesday,
May 7 will be the night of the Annual General Meeting, 7:00 p.m. at the
curling club. Hope to see everyone there.
Saturday,
May 10, BANQUET NIGHT. Tickets are on sale now and
the banquet committee is busy planning and decorating. Attending
the banquet is a great way to cap off the curling season and as usual
our incoming President, Steve Hindle, is hosting the post-banquet party
at his house in Embrun.
As this
year winds down I want to express my gratitude to all of you who have
supported me, my executive and the curling club.
Thank
you to all of you, Murray Dundass, Ken Quaile, Pat
Donnelly, Jeff McGee, Jim Hines, Kirk Mumby and Graeme Taylor and any
others who came to dig out the south side of the club after our last
big storm. Hopefully that will be our last blast
from Old Man Winter.
Thank
you to Walter Zebchuk who hosted the mens teams from the City of Ottawa
bonspiel who came to play in Metcalfe. Walter has
been volunteering for this job for a number of years now so we once
again thank you for looking after the City of Ottawa curlers.
Thank
you to Daytimers/Club 55 for generously donating $500.00 to the
Metcalfe Curling Club. We really appreciate your
support and will put your donation to good use.
Thanks
to Rick Smith who spent a Monday night helping yours truly clean up
some areas that were “noted” in the heath inspectors report.
Thank you Rick for also keeping everyone up to date
with your newsletters.
Thank you
to Steve Battig for cleaning out the ice machine
which was also a job that was noted in the inspection report.
Thanks
goes to Jeff Cumming, Rodney Davis and Kirk Mumby who have been keeping
an eye on the sump pumps and who, last weekend, brought in Bill Bishop
to avert a potential problem.
Rodney
and Anne Davis and Jeff also spent a good part of last Friday night
trying to fix the ice machine at the bar. Progress
was made and with a little more tweaking the ice machine should be
popping out those cubes in no time.
A great
big thank you goes to Denis Lanoutte’s fixed team, Neil Ristimaki,
Larry Sisson and Bob Sisson for volunteering to run the kitchen for the
Flintstone rental, Sat. March 29. Nice to see some
new chefs in the club!
Thank
you to everyone who has contributed in some way to the club this year.
I can’t say enough about what a great club we have
and it has been an honour for me to be President.
Sue
As of this morning, Dunc Jamieson's senior team is 3 -
0 at the 2008 Canadian Seniors being held in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan Yesterday they defeated Nova Scotia's Brian Rafuse 4
- 3.
Dunc has asked me to pass on the following to our club
members:
"We would really like to thank everyone at the
Metcalfe Curling Club for their support. Although the Ontario Curling
Association pays for much of the trip, its still expensive for us. The
contributions from the members of the curling club are greatly
appreciated. Just as importantly, I appreciate the card and words
of encouragement from friends. We will try to live up to that as much
as possible. No matter what I curl in, the club has been very
supportive. We are headed off to practice now followed by the rules
meeting, pictures, skills competition and reception. Thanks everyone.
Dunc
Thursday night Men's Curling
An invitation has been extended to all male curlers
who would like to come up to the club this Thursday, March
27th, 2008 to join in the end of season social night for men's
curling. There
is room for a couple of spares and we will having
pizza and drinks to celebrate the end of another great
season.
Mixed Curling Reminder
This Friday March 28th is the last
night of mixed curling for this season and your entertainment committee
want to close the season with a great party. So fortified
with the Hicks' famous margaritas and nachos and dressed in
your finest beach clothes we would love to see you on stage performing
one of your favourite tunes. Guests are welcome.
Curling Club Banquet May 10th, 2008
The ticket price we are charging is enough to cover the
price of the meal and some decorations; this year we are going to have
live entertainment with the rock party band Conspiracy, so we are going
to run a couple of fundraisers to pay for it and the first one has
started! You will notice a very nice basket on display at the bar,
please buy raffle tickets to try to win it! Don’t miss out on this one.
Banquet Tickets are on sale now; make sure you get yours right away!
Snow Removal
Due to no fault of his own, when Ken Quaile got to the
club last week to help with the snow removal, Murray Dundass had
already got it completed. Our thanks go out to Murray and to all
of the people who helped and to Ken for volunteering.

Calling all Entertainers
Friday March 28th is Home Grown
Café night at the club. The entertainment committee is still
looking for performers. So far there has not been a lot of
Metcalfe Curling Club Idol performers
jump up, so now's your chance. The theme is beach
party night with the Hicks' famous margaritas with nachos
dishes also available. Please contact Jim Hines or Anne Davis if
you or a friend want to perform. You do not have to be a club member to
perform.
Jenny Kilgallen
On Saturday, Sue delivered a plant/floral arrangement in
a ceramic pot to Jenny on behalf of our club. Jenny is coming along
with her recovery but it will still be quite awhile before she is
feeling great again. Her husband Jim says about 6 to 8 weeks recovery,
but thanks to quality drugs she is coping with the pain.
Sangria Night
Thanks to Kariane Warnock for the great sangria drinks
last Friday night. Also, she will share the recipe if you ask her.
In my opinion and I did a lot of testing, they were great.
Snow Removal
Thanks to Ken Quaile and Murray Dundass for bringing
their heavy equipment to help with the snow removal. Also thanks to
Kirk Mumby, Graham Taylor and all of the others who showed up with
shovels.
Remember: The first day of spring is tomorrow.
March 12, 2008
Go Ontario! Go Duncan!
From March 22 through March 30 our very own Duncan Jamieson will
participating in the 2008 Canadian Seniors being held in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan. Along with skip Bruce Delaney, third Rick Bachand,
and lead George Mitchell, Duncan will be faced with the challenge of
beating former Brier winners Russ Howard (1987 & 1983),
representing New Brunswick and Vic Peters (1992) representing
Manitoba. In addition, Brian Rafuse will be representing Nova
Scotia just as he did in this year's Brier. The schedule for the
2008 Canadian Seniors will be posted either tonight or Monday on
the bulletin boards at the club with Duncan's games
highlighted.
From all the members of the Metcalfe Curling Club we wish Duncan and
his team mates great success and good curling throughout the week.

perform for your fellow club members,
then we want to see you up on the stage. If you plan
on taking the stage, please put your name on the sign up sheet that is
on the bulletin
board upstairs so we have an idea of how many
performers we will have. We know from past years that we have many
talented club
members, so come on out and entertain us on the last
night of mixed curling.
This will also be the Hicks' famous margarita night
with nachos dishes also available. If you have never tasted one
of Doug and Judy's
special drinks, you are in for a real taste
treat. (Special acknowledgements going to Dr. Tequila - Graham
Hicks)

BNI Rental on Saturday March 8, 2008
I would personally like to thank the volunteer kitchen and bar staff
who came to the club in this season's worst weather conditions
(so far) to help make this rental a success. Thanks to Ken Sullivan and
Greg Jamieson on the bar and Rob Howell (convenor), Karen and
Andy Girard, Rob Paradis, Ray Smith, Liston McIlhagga, Larry Licari,
Mike Reynolds and Andrew Ashton in the kitchen.
Thanks to their efforts the BNI rental was a lot of fun for a bunch of

Utica, New
York Bonspiel
Utica, New York got a
treat last weekend, when the mighty Keith Baker team which
includes Agnes Lee, Jeff and Sue Cumming decided to pay a visit.
They drank and curled real well, just missing a chance at the "A"
final and finally losing the "D" final. Both Agnes and Sue said
it was a blast! The theme for the spiel was a "Red Neck
Bonspiel" with lots of duct tape and flannel everywhere. There
were a few other Canadian teams there including one from Richmond.
Metcalfe/Russell
Spiel
This Saturday, March
1st, 2008 is the Metcalfe/Russell spiel with the final being held

The Then & Now Spiel
Last weekend's Then & Now Spiel was a huge success with great
weather Friday and Saturday. Congratulations to the winners Billy Joe
Woods, Olivia Woods, Cory Davis and Martine Cheff. Bill Woods Jr. and
his committee did a great job on the ice and prizes considering our up
and down weather and his involvement with The Dalhousie Lake spiel last
week.
Mike Reynolds and his team dressed in the older style curling costumes
including the facial hair (not on the female members of the team) gave
the spiel that nice touch.
Suzanne Cunningham who used to be a member of our club
until she moved to Nova Scotia was welcomed back with open arms.We
even had spectators on Saturday afternoon
watching the outside curling as they passed on the
street and seeing how much fun we all were having. Looking forward to
next year at the new outdoor venue.
The Battle of The Sexes
The Battle of The Sexes spiel for this Saturday, February 23rd, 2008
